Mountain High Metals LLC is owned and operated by Daniel McClung Kerr. From an early age, Daniel has been immersed in the arts. He grew up in Kernersville and was highly active in all classes offered at The Sawtooth Center in Winston Salem, NC. The study of the arts continued throughout his childhood which resulted in awards, such as the scholastic art award for photography and painting. He attended art honors camps for dark room/35 mm film photography. During the summers he volunteered for the art department at Appalachian State University and attended All Arts and Sciences camp. These studies continued throughout high school where he received awards for his work in photoshop.

For college, he attended Cape Fear Community College, where he received his USCG Captains license and majored in Marine Technology, with a minor in Metalsmithing. After graduation, he taught art to kids and underwater photography to teens at UNCW. After college, he moved to Boone, NC and began a career in winter sports photography. While working as a photographer, he also attended Wilkes Community College. There he received a diploma in Welding Technology, where he was hired as an instructor to teach incoming students.

After a year of teaching welding, Daniel pursued a career with the union and became a Journeyman Boilermaker/Pipe welder. He worked on many high-profile jobs and was highly sought after for his skill in welding over the next 8 years. He worked in high end fabrication shop as well as in the field. During this time, he acquired many welding certifications, such as nuclear pressure vessel certification in all processes and positions, and high-pressure tube and pipe certifications.

In 2020, Daniel started his own business, Mountain High Metals LLC., to pursue his passion in blacksmithing, metalsmithing, mobile welding, and fabrication. Since the start of this new venture, he has been incredibly involved with the WNC Sculpture Center, located at the old Patterson School for Boys, in Lenoir, NC. It is there he learned about casting, pouring metal, sculpture, and artistic blacksmithing. In 2021, he was featured at the Lenoir Sculpture Celebration, Fire on the Mountain blacksmithing festival, in Spruce Pine, and many other shows in Western NC. His talents have provided both artistic and functional solutions for many businesses in his hometown of Elkin, NC including The Reeves Theater, Fruition Cocktail Bar, and Raffaldini Vineyard and Winery.

Most recently, Mountain High Metals LLC. found its new home in the heart of downtown Elkin. The Studio, located at 113 West Main Street Elkin, NC is the ideal space for Daniel to cultivate his craft, while bringing the art of metal working to his community. There he will be working in conjunction with The Yadkin Valley Fiber Center to help nurture and grow the arts in downtown Elkin. He will be offering metal working classes, as well as featuring his own artistic pieces at The Studio. Stay tuned for updates on classes and events as he embarks on this new and exciting journey!
